There is always room in the heart for one more friend. So, Ms.Yin | Ms.Yang were very happy to introduce two gorgeous local brands to each other: The Missing Piece and Elyse & i. We took these two newly acquainted labels on a blind date around the streets of Tiong Bahru and what fun we had!

So, where does a friendship begin? Two like minded bodies who enjoy the same qualities normally means things get off to a good start. The Missing Piece with its effortlessly stylish, well tailored designs is a perfect match for Elyse & i whose carefully handcrafted line of handbags and accessories exude chic every style step of the way.  As you will see, there is no doubt that both labels not only share stand out design but most appealing of all: this comes with attainable price tags which always makes Ms.Yin & I very happy.

Another quality that these labels have in common is that both designers are self taught both deciding to embrace their creative side. Ee-ling Ting, the designer behind The Missing Piece, picked up sewing while she was living in Australia where she loved to shop for fabric and make her own clothes as a hobby.  On becoming a mum, Ee-ling started making matching outfits for her children and what started out as a hobby soon turned into a business when friends and passers-by started to ask where they could get the designs that Ee-ling and her kids were wearing. The Missing Piece was born. We were curious as to the meaning behind the name.  For me, I thought it was to do with finding your missing piece when you have kids. Whereas Ms.Yin thought it was to with the actual design of the clothes as some signature pieces have cut-outs.  Other interpretations have included finding the missing piece in your wardrobe or discovering the missing piece in your life to give you that extra boost of confidence or meaning. But Ee-ling says it’s up to you to decide what you want The Missing Piece to be.

Emily Cheetham, the creative mind behind Elyse & i, started her design journey when she inherited an old Singer sewing machine from a relative. What started off as a hobby stitching together scraps of materials, leather and trims fashioning them into handbags also led to a business endeavour and Emily ditching her job in PR. Added impetus came whilst making a bag for her Mum one Christmas. She didn’t like the handles on the bag and decided she could do better! So, she made another bag but still didn’t like the handles on the newly made one, so she then decided to take matters even further and a bulk order of 50 cane handles was the next step. Finally, Emily had the perfect gift for her Mum but 49 handles left over. There was only one thing to do…make more bags! The rest is history.  As for the brand name,  Elyse & i hasn’t always been Elyse & i. The label originally started off as Cheet London, playing on Emily’s family name and her own nick name, but as the label went from strength to strength and began to grow internationally so did the mispronunciation at times even to the variant Cheap London…and oh-no-no that’s definitely not what this brand is about!  So, Cheet London became Elyse & i.  Elyse is Emily’s daughter and there we have what many girls can only dream of – a handbag line named after them!

As our blind date drew to an end, we were pretty confident that these two stylish labels, both based in Singapore, skipping sartorially hand-in-hand through the streets of Tiong Bahru would meet again.  We just knew that these two would get along.  Ms.Yin | Ms.Yang fashion matchmakers at your service 🖤
